  • Why should I wear sunscreen?

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a type of radiation emitted from the sun that has negative effects on skin health. Unprotected UV exposure can cause photoaging, fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, sunburns, and skin cancer like squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma. As a result, sunscreen is the ultimate anti-aging product that belongs in your daily skincare routine. By wearing sunscreen, you help prevent discoloration and dark spots, promote an even skin tone, and keep the skin on your face and body healthy overall.

Remember that sun protection isn’t just a summertime essential, it’s a year-round responsibility. On cloudy days, your skin is still vulnerable. Up to 80% of UV radiation reaches the earth even when the sun isn’t visible so layer on the sunscreen every single day to protect your youthful glow!

  • What’s the difference between SunFilter and SunShady?

The skin on your face and the skin on your body are different, and we created our vegan sunscreens with that in mind. SunFilter is designed specifically for your face and is formulated with non-comedogenic ingredients so it’s friendly to acne-prone skin. It also doubles as an everyday moisturizer and leaves a matte, featherweight finish to flawlessly layer under makeup.

SunShady is part of our body skincare collection. It’s designed specifically for your body, from your shoulders all the way down to your toes. While it doesn’t share all of the same characteristics as SunFilter, it does offer total protection against UV rays, blue light, environmental pollutants, and free radicals.

Both SunFilter and SunShady are reef-safe, made with non-nano 100% zinc oxide, help hydrate and protect your skin, and leave no white cast.

  • Will sunscreen cause breakouts?

SunFilter and SunShady are cruelty-free and vegan sunscreens that were formulated to work well with acne-prone skin. Both sunscreens are non-comedogenic so they won’t clog pores or cause breakouts. Instead of making your skin feel oily or greasy, SunFilter and SunShady leave a featherweight finish.

  • When should I apply sunscreen in my skincare routine?

Sunscreen should be applied after moisturizer as the last step of your morning skincare routine. This way, it forms a protective layer on top of your skin, after allowing the products in your routine to work their magic.

  • How much sunscreen should I use?

Starting with SunFilter for your face and neck, use a nickel-sized amount and apply to your skin in even layers. For your body, start with a nickel-sized amount of SunShady and apply to any exposed areas. Use more as needed. Reapply every two hours or after 40 minutes of sweating or water activity.

  • What’s the difference between mineral vs. chemical sunscreen?

When it comes to mineral sunscreen vs. chemical sunscreen, they differ in two main ways: ingredients and the effects of those ingredients. Chemical sunscreen contains active ingredients (i.e. oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, octisalate, and homosalate) that penetrate and absorb into the skin, and protect the skin through a chemical reaction. However, they have been shown to have negative effects on both the human body and marine life. According to the Environmental Working Group, oxybenzone and octinoxate in particular have the highest toxicity concerns and have been linked to hormone disruption. When these ingredients enter our oceans, they also have major toxic effects on the health of coral reefs in that they damage the corals’ DNA and decrease their defenses against bleaching.

Mineral sunscreen contains physical agents, like zinc oxide and titanium oxide, that sit on top of skin rather than penetrating or absorbing into it. These ingredients form a physical barrier that ultimately blocks UV rays from hitting the skin at all. Zinc oxide and titanium oxide are recognized as safe and effective by the Environmental Working Group plus mineral sunscreen is less likely to cause irritation, making it a better option for all skin types.
